How far away is Glacier National Park from Whitefish, MT?

It's a little under 37 miles away, it took me less than an hour even with cold snowy weather.

What activities to do there?

There are tons of activities to do in the Winter. One of my bucket list adventures was to snowshoe. I am OBSESSED. It was so easy and is a great way to see the scenery. By Lake McDonald Lodge, you will find some great cross-country skiing and snowshoe paths. You can actually take this path and ski or snowshoe the whole Going to the Sun road!

Find a full list of Winter activities in the park HERE.

What I wore to keep warm?

I wore layers! It's much easier to take a layer off if you need. Walking around I was completely fine with my COAT and VEST layered together. Snowshoeing, I could have taken the vest off and worn just my coat but I kept them both on to be sure I didn't become chilled. I live in THESE leggings when it's cold outside, they never fail to keep me warm. Wearing thick socks and my Sorel Snow Boots as well, read all about WHY I chose these boots HERE.

What to pack for a day trip?

SNACKS. The shops aren't open in the Winter. You need to bring any snacks, meals, and drinks with you. I brought some local beef jerky, typical car ride snacks, and water. We were sure to bring our snow clothes as well in case I decided to go in the deeper (I'm talking about FEET) snow. Always bring your camera. I brought my SLR as well as my Instax for a fun memory!

Places to stop on the way there?

There are shops that are along the drive that have Huckleberry products that are completely to die for. It depends on the day which ones will be open. Whichever one you stop at, grab a Huckleberry milkshake and a Huckleberry honey. You WON'T be sorry. Before I even set out on this drive, I had to stop at Montana Coffee Traders to grab a cup of the BEST coffee in the area.

Places to stay near Glacier National Park in the Winter?

I  loved my stay at the Grouse Mountain Lodge in Whitefish. This is an easy drive over to GNP. During the Winter, the lodges and hotels near the park are closed for the season. Whitefish is a great place to stay since GNP is a great day trip to take. Whitefish has amazing options for food, activities, and lodging. I can't recommend the Grouse Mountain Lodge enough, though. Cozy, clean, and affordable!

Best places to stop for historic photos?

You HAVE to stop at the entrance sign and take a picture. It's absolutely breathtaking in the snow. I stop by Lake McDonald to take photos, and this time I was able to walk ON the lake because it was frozen. I stopped at the day use area near the entrance as well as go to Lake McDonald Lodge to take photos. The lodge is amazing to look at as well as all the little cabins around it. In the Spring and Summertime, you need to drive the Going to the Sun Road and take photos along the way on that adventure. The views are beyond beautiful.

I hope you plan a trip to GNP, you won't regret it!

Glacier National Park is a must see view on your bucket list. Frozen lakes and a winter wonderland.
