Jason and I lived in SoCal for about 4 years when we were first married. Being so far away from both of our families was really difficult. I grew up with a Christmas that was filled with traditions! We decided to make our own traditions since 4 out of the 5 Christmas's in the past years have been spent in SoCal vs. Oregon with our immediate family. We were blessed to have family not too far away from us to spend Christmas day with in the desert!

Here are some of the fun traditions we started and still carry through each season!

  1. Christmas Light Date: We would drive around and look at any and all the Christmas lights we could find as we sipped Peppermint Mochas from Starbucks. This was reminiscent of our first date 7 years ago! After the lights, we would get bundled up and have clam chowder on the pier.
  2. Exchange Christmas Ornaments: When we were married we had quite a few ornaments but wanted to build our collection together. Each year we exchange ornaments that are reflective of our personalities. For example: my husband has a Tobasco sauce ornament!
  3. Holiday CocaCola: We always have a 6 pack of the glass bottle Holiday CocaCola under our tree during December. We slowly drink them in the weeks leading up to Christmas day but save 2 for Christmas morning.
  4. ELF while decorating: We both LOVE the movie Elf so we started watching it the evening we decorated the tree while sipping on Hot Cocoa and eating cookies.
  5. Christmas Eve Dinner: We would go to our Church's Christmas Eve service and then grab Olive Garden to go. We would set up our dinner at the table with candles and the Christmas Tree lights. It was truly magical every time.
  6. Christmas Eve Night: We would drag our mattress downstairs and sleep in front of the tree like two giddy kids waiting for Santa!
  7. Christmas Morning: I would make biscuits and gravy for breakfast. As we opened gifts, we would sip on some delicious mimosas.
  8. Christmas Nap: Since we don't have kids we would always take a moment and nap in the afternoon. Eating delicious food and opening presents takes it out of you, lol!
  9. Photos: We always try and set up a tripod in our living room so we can get a picture of us in front of our tree. One year we had to take pictures of each other in front of the tree because we had a very hyper puppy trying to run around!
  10. Mistletoe: Real mistletoe is actually a parasite, who wants to kiss under a parasite?! Not me! My sister made a felt version that is adorable. We always hang that on the doorway between our living room and kitchen.

Traditions are the perfect way to look forward to the Holidays and not have to worry about how you are going to celebrate each year! Make some of your own that fit you and your family.
